NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations Level Courses

Adopted by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents helps reduce accidents, injuries, illnesses, disabilities, and fatalities by ensuring that responders to haz-mat/WMD incidents are up to the task.

NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials/WMD Awareness 
Level Course

Awareness level personnel shall be persons who, in the course of their normal duties, could encounter an emergency involving hazardous materials/weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and who are expected to recognize the presence of the hazardous materials/WMD, protect themselves, call for trained personnel, and secure the area. This course is compliant with the 2018 edition of NFPA 472 for the Hazardous Materials /WMD Awareness personnel. 

Course Description

This course complies with NFPA 472, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous

Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents, 2018 and with NFPA 1072, Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications 2017.


Duration

The course length is 8 hours.

Course Agenda

During the course the students will be instructed in the following topics:

  • Detecting the presence of hazardous materials/WMD through container shapes, placards, labels, and occupancy/location information.
  • Surveying hazardous materials/WMD Incidents.
  • Collecting hazard information through utilization of the 2024 Department of Transportation North American Emergency Response Guidebook.
  • Initiating protective actions to keep additional harm from occurring.
  • Awareness Personnel role in a hazmat/WMD incident.
  • Identification and safety when encountering illicit Clandestine drug and WMD labs .
  • DOT Hazardous Materials Classifications 
  • Basic overview of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Level Course

Course Description

This course meets or exceeds the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1072 Hazardous Materials/WMD Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications; Chapter 5 - Operations, Chapter 6.2 - Personal Protective Equipment, Chapter 6.4 - Technical Decontamination, NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of 

Mass Destruction Incidents; Chapter 5 - Competencies for Operations Level Responders, Chapter 6  - Competencies for Operations Level Responders Assigned Mission-Specific Responsibilities, and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 1910.120 (q)(6)(ii) for Operations-level personnel.

 

Duration

The course duration is 24 hours. 

 

Prerequisites

Participants pursuing certification must provide proof of NFPA 1072 Awareness or NFPA 472 Competencies for Awareness Level Personnel (2002, 2008, or 2013 editions).

  • Implementing the Response: Mission-Specific Victim Rescue and Recovery
  • Implementing the Response: Mission-Specific Product Control
  • Implementing the Response: Mission-Specific Evidence Preservation and Public Safety Sampling
  • Implementing the Response: Mission-Specific Illicit Laboratories

Course Certificates 

  • Course Completion certificates for students successfully passing the skills and written exams will be mailed upon completion of the course, along with copies of the course rosters. **Exam must be taken within 4 months of course completion
